What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist originally developed to treat diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels. GLP-1 is a key regulator released by the gut after the consumption of carbohydrates or fats. It promotes insulin secretion and production, reduces glucagon secretion (which typically stimulates sugar production), slows gastric emptying, and curbs appetite and food intake. GLP-1 also interacts with brain regions that control hunger and satiety, helping to suppress appetite and increase feelings of fullness. When combined with diet and exercise, semaglutide can lead to:
- Significant weight loss
- Lower the risk of developing diabetes
- Lowering risk of heart disease
